Importance of teamwork skills in college and work

If you are at school, college, or university your education would need a great deal of teamwork. Learning how to work well in a group will help you develop other useful skills you could apply later in life. Research has shown that working in a team helps students be more open-minded, analytical and motivated. Here are a few reasons why teamwork skills are important, and some tips and tricks on how to develop them.

Benefits of working on your teamwork skills

Teaches Responsibility – students working together will teach them responsibility. If one of them fails to deliver, all of them would go down. It’s like a domino effect.

Improves Communication – another reason why teamwork in education is important is because it develops and improves communication. Be open

When working in a group, don’t be shy to share your ideas. Even though you might think they are unoriginal or boring, others might have a great idea on how to execute them. As we stated before, good and open communication is key to a good group environment. You must be able to convey your opinion shamelessly. This will take time, but don’t give up. Practice it day by day.

Create a warm environment

You don’t have to be close friends with your teammates, but you can still try to create a healthy working environment. A nice way to do that is to decide on a team name everyone agrees on. When you set a group name, it develops group identity, which leads to better results. Brainstorming leads to new ideas, and new ideas lead to fresh and original solutions. A nice, healthy and welcoming environment that you create will lead to a successful outcome.

Be aware

If you notice someone avoids eye-contact, doesn’t take part, acts anxious or insecure, be the one to approach them and start a conversation. Ask them questions and try to include them in a group discussion. Feeling valued and involved will make them want to take part and be useful to the team’s incentive. Make sure to be aware of others’ body language.

Accept criticism

If you work in a team, another thing you must be ready for is accepting criticism. This is easy to do once you realize not to take everything to heart. If your idea or work isn’t well thought out or executed, it doesn’t mean you as a person are not good enough. What it means is you have to work a little harder and shift your focus. It takes a lot of trial and error. Next time someone critiques your work don’t take it too personally. Accept it and focus on problem-solving.

Understand responsibilities

This is one of the more important parts of teamwork. You should take a piece of paper or open notes in your phone and list all the responsibilities you have as a group member. Then, take note of the incentive of the team. First, focus on tackling your part of the liabilities, and with that see what else you can do to achieve the common goal.

Conclusion

Working in a team doesn’t require you to love it. All you need are tools on how to manage working in a group and fulfilling different tasks. Even though teamwork seems redundant and unnecessary, it teaches you valuable leadership behaviours you will greatly appreciate later in life. To be a good team player, you must be both a leader and a follower. It takes time, but with persistance, humility, and an open mind, your group can reach for stars.
