The Society and its members focus on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, refrigeration and sustainability within the industry. Through research, standards writing, publishing and continuing education, ASHRAE shapes tomorrow’s built environment today. ASHRAE was formed as the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers by the merger in 1959 of American Society of Heating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHAE) founded in 1894 and The American Society of Refrigerating Engineers (ASRE) founded in 1904. The Hellenic Chapter chartered in 1999, aims to increase communication and awareness between members of ASHRAE residing in Greece, according to the objectives and activities of ASHRAE, such as the organization of scientific and information activities, promotion of the scientific association , supporting new colleagues and scientific research & development in the fields of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning. ASHRAE chapters are to liase with all engineers, engineering bodies, universities, research centers and Governmental departments to spread the awareness of ASHRAE Standards and Guidelines and to assist whenever needed for the green and sustainable society & Sustainable World. Since 2003, the Hellenic Chapter is also registered as an non-profit organization in Greece.
