Overview
Duke University EMS is a Durham, North Carolina-based emergency medical services provider dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of the Duke University and Durham community. For over 27 years, this all-volunteer, student-run division of the Duke University Police Department and Duke Life Flight has been a vital resource, offering comprehensive medical support at Duke University sporting events and providing essential community services. We respond to emergencies and offer CPR/First Aid training, solidifying our commitment to proactive healthcare. Founded in 1994 by Matt Womble, Tim Pieh, and Sacha Picard, Duke University EMS has grown from a small student-led initiative to a fully integrated and respected organization, continually evolving to meet the needs of our campus and surrounding areas.
Initially focused on providing stand-by coverage for basketball games, Duke University EMS quickly expanded its scope to include responding to emergency calls and offering EMT-Basic training. Key milestones include the acquisition of Motorola radios in 1996, a Chevy Trailblazer in 2004, and a dedicated apartment on Central Campus in 2005 – all contributing to improved response times and operational efficiency.
Today, Duke University EMS continues to serve the Duke community with dedication and professionalism, providing over 300 days of emergency service annually and operating under the oversight of Duke Life Flight. We are proud to be a cornerstone of campus safety and a trusted resource for the Durham community.
