Galerie Vera Munro

Galerie Vera Munro was founded in Hamburg in 1977 and works with a range of diverse artists who are active in different media such as painting, drawing, installation, sculpture, photography and video. The gallery is the primary representative of both emerging and established contemporary artists, all of whom have done their first shows in Hamburg and have later been exhibited and collected by museums and institutions worldwide. The gallery is also known for its thematic group shows, often confronting classical artists such as Gerhard Richter, Donald Judd, Blinky Palermo etc. with mid-career and youngest artists. Most of the time these shows are accompanied by catalogues. In May 2020, the gallery opened an exhibition with Rosemarie Trockel, which is the very first project of the recently established Nick and Vera Munro Foundation. Part of this foundation project is a publication with texts by Yilmaz Dziewior (Museum Ludwig, Köln) and Brigid Doherty (Princeton University, USA). The Nick and Vera Munro foundation has set itself the task to document artistic attitudes in the visual arts, which deliberately position themselves against the superficial trend. With a clear, uncompromising vision, the foundation seeks to focus on permanently relevant works. The exhibition includes a publication on an art-historical topic which has not yet been completed in a comprehensive form. Afterwards the exhibited work is donated to a museum. The combination of exhibition and publication will particularly refer to midterm artists, who have already achieved an art-historical importance and are therefore inspiring and orientating for the younger generation of artists. The Nick and Vera Munro Foundation plans to host such a project once a year.
