Overview

IGME, authorized by the State to explore the natural earth resources, is the major geological research organization in Greece, based in Athens with 6 regional Departments. It is employing 200 personnel and regulated by the Ministry of Environment. It has co-ordinated and participated in several competitive and other European and National projects, and is providing the required Geological, Hydrogeological, Geochemical, Geophysical data. The Department of Central Macedonia has 12 employees, being involved in basic geological research, exploration and evaluation of ore deposits and industrial minerals, geothermal fields, hydrogeological surveys and water quality control, applied geochemistry, environmental control and monitoring, special studies on safe disposal sites for industrial and domestic solid wastes, studies of earthquakes and landslides, often with thematic maps. Environmental protection including surveys of contaminated soil and water by industrial and mining activities. Studies of liquid and solid waste disposal methods and sites. Geochemical studies of soil and water contamination by heavy metals or hazardous substances (asbestos fibres, PCBs, etc.), Studies of erosion in coastal and riverbank areas and morphological changes. Evaluation of imported pollution and contamination. Location of urban areas with increased emission of radon or high levels of radioactivity.
