Lambeth Community Solar

Lambeth Community Solar is a community benefit society and borough-wide energy cooperative based in London that installs and manages community-owned solar panels on schools and public buildings across the London borough of Lambeth. Founded in 2019 and supported by Repowering London, the organisation enables local residents, businesses, and community organisations to invest in renewable energy infrastructure and benefit directly from clean electricity generation. The cooperative has successfully installed 83 kWp of solar panels on Norwood School (October 2019) and 62 kWp on Elmgreen School (February 2020), generating savings for educational institutions whilst reducing carbon emissions and addressing fuel poverty in the local area.

Lambeth Community Solar operates as a democratically governed Community Benefit Society where members—both investors and non-investor supporters—each hold one vote regardless of investment level, ensuring that all proceeds are reinvested locally into Lambeth. The organisation raises capital through community share offers (with investment starting from £100, or £50 for eligible concessions), providing members with an estimated 3% annual return while directing surplus revenue to community initiatives. Through its model of ethical investment, educational workshops, and inclusive membership, Lambeth Community Solar combines renewable energy deployment with community cohesion and climate action, enabling residents aged 16+ to participate in the energy transition whilst tackling fuel poverty and building towards a sustainable borough.
