ECOLOGICAL BENEFITS OF USING LIME MORTAR "Interest in the use of Lime for construction has grown as a result of its ecological credentials" Produced at lower temperatures than cement, lime mortar requires less energy, resulting in 20% less CO2 output. In addition, lime mortar absorbs CO2 during the hydration process and over a period of time, becomes carbon neutral. Lime mortar and bricks used with lime mortar can be recycled, unlike their cement bonded equivalents, which can only be used for hardcore. Lime's ability to control moisture means it is compatible with low-energy, sustainable materials, such as water reed, straw, hemp, timber and clay.
