Open Studio Labs

Open Studio Labs is a Durham, North Carolina-based research and development lab dedicated to addressing the critical shortage of skilled engineers for open source software. We offer a pioneering Engineering Residency (ER) program – the ‘first-of-its-kind’ – that equips highly skilled U.S. engineers to contribute to vital open source ecosystems.

Our mission is to empower enterprises, governments, and NGOs to confidently manage their open source investments by fostering a sustainable talent pipeline. We achieve this by embedding engineers in critical upstream projects, tackling technical debt, bolstering security, and ensuring long-term project stability.

Inspired by the medical residency model, our program utilizes a ‘See It, Learn It, Teach It’ methodology, delivering immediate value while building expertise. Open Studio Labs (OS Labs) helps organizations reduce technical debt, mitigate security risks, and build a resilient open source strategy.

We work with Chief Technology Officers (CTOs) and engineering leaders across various sectors, providing a practical solution to the growing OS talent gap.
