R. Mertens GmbH

As a mechanical engineer Rolf Mertens (RM) started his career in process engineering, where he worked as a project engineer in the field of vacuum technology. During that time he recognized the importance of seals and focussed on that area at Burgmann, a leading German sealing company and later in leading position at Durametallic (USA), a subsidiary of the Flowserve group today. For this kind of seals, pumps are the main application. That led to a close cooperation with all manufacturers of process pumps globally. After the takeover of Durametallic by Flowserve the company was restructured. RM chose to continue working in the area of pumps and he started his own business, Ingenieurbüro R. Mertens, consulting the appliers of seals (chemical industry, oil industry, conventional and nuclear power plants). The business developed well. In 1982 RM accepted the offer of Adams (UK) to work for them as a distribution in Germany and Austria. Adams is a leading company for the lubrication of pumps in Europe. Consequently, the company was extended through the distribution of trading goods and the transfer to a limited liability company was necessary. The R. Mertens GmbH was registered in 1984. The globalization influenced the formerly purely German business to orient internationally. This resulted in the offer from Trico, the leading manufacturer from the US, to take over their distribution for Central Europe. Since an increasing number of customers started to convey special requirements, which could not be covered by existing devices, RM has started developing own lubrication equipment. Operation conditions at offshore or seawater environments, water desalination etc. required different materials. Stainless steel is favored instead of non-ferrous metals.
