UAB Institute for Human Rights

The UAB Institute for Human Rights is a leading educational institution and research center dedicated to advancing human rights globally, based in Birmingham, Alabama. We provide a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration among scholars, students, and activists to raise awareness, foster research, and design practical solutions for promoting and protecting human and civil rights – locally, nationally, and internationally. Our work encompasses education, research, and community engagement, focusing on both civil and political rights, as well as economic, social, and cultural rights. Through innovative programs like the Birmingham Immersive Community Empowerment Program (BICEP) and the Human Rights Lab, we equip the next generation of human rights leaders and contribute to a more just and equitable world. We offer a major and minor in Human Rights, and a Master of Arts in the Anthropology of Peace and Human Rights, alongside extensive research opportunities and outreach initiatives.
