World Outside My Shoes

World Outside My Shoes is a non-profit organization based in the United States, dedicated to fostering human connection and restorative thinking through storytelling and educational experiences. Founded in 2008, the organization addresses critical issues of polarization, conflict, and belonging by drawing on Carl Wilkens’ firsthand accounts of Rwanda’s post-genocide rebuilding efforts. We serve schools, faith communities, corporate environments, and social agencies, equipping individuals with the tools to build trusting relationships and promote empathy.

Our work centers on interactive school visits, restorative practices workshops, film screenings, and immersive educational experiences, including a Rwanda educational immersive experience. By facilitating conversations rooted in respect, empathy, and inclusion, World Outside My Shoes inspires individuals to explore the ‘World Outside My Shoes’ and contribute to a more connected and compassionate world. We are a leader in restorative justice education, providing resources and training to organizations seeking to cultivate a culture of healing and understanding.
