Green Nudges is a compilation of interventions that are aimed at influencing behaviour to trigger people to act more sustainable. With the climate crisis humanity faces one of the biggest challenges of all times. We just cannot afford to keep going as we did over the last decades. We need to change. But change is hard. If you’d ask people if they support sustainable behaviour or choices in order to save our planet and keep it inhabitable for future generations, a majority would certainly say yes. But how anthropologist Margaret Mead pointed out years ago: “What people say, what people do and and what people say they do are entirely different things.” People may support the good cause, but still like their daily meat, their big combustions SUVs or their long hot showers. This is often known as the “attitude-behavior-gap” or the “intention-action-gap”. The reasons for that gap are manyfold: - Humans are wired to imitate the (unsustainable) majority. - Humans are creatures of habit. And habits are hard to break. - Humans are selfish and status-driven. Motivation is THE driver for behavior. - Humans make irrational decisions. - Humans survive and thrive in the short-term. They don’t care much about abstract, future consequences. The Green Nudges we will showcase are meant to trigger real action. Sometimes immediate and sometimes at a later stage, when people are facing a decision and still have that nudge in mind. Not all of them have data available to back up the effectiveness. But we understand them as inspiration for institutions, decision makers or individuals for a greater good. For real action. The idea of nudging is not new and there are already quite a few around. But we had the feel that a lot of them are hidden in theoretical abstracts and scientific publications. Our objective is to make them more accessible, more easy to understand and to share. General information: Greening Deserts is a cultural, educational, economic, social, scientific and sustainable agriculture project using classical greening or gardening methods but also new and alternative techniques. Greening of deserts, dry areas or barren lands with sustainable irrigation and renewable energy. Using filtered ocean or sea water, sharing systems overground and underground. Special desert plants can produce fast topsoil and create partwise shadows for plants around. With the right (financial) support we can start everywhere topsoil is needed. Together with the people of each region we also can create parks, woods and forests, especially in dry countries like Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Spain, Lebanon, Syria, Saudia Arabia, Qatar, UAE, Iran, Pakistan, India, China, Australia, etc. At the moment we concentrate on North Africa. To accelerate the process professional greenhouses will be installed and newest sustainable cultivation techniques like aquaponics or hydroponics will be used. The project starts primarily near coasts with building Greening Camps, a kind of farm with greenhouses and containers, tents or huts. Benefits of clean technologies like irrigation with natural water sources (seas and oceans) and renewable energy supply with solar and water energy. The sea water will be pumped into over- and underground reservoirs at the camp. After that we can produce different kind of water, mineralised drink water, use, service or process water. To produce topsoil we use best of soil producer plants, growing fast and producing a high amount of biomass. These special plants can also be used as organic fertilizer. More topsoil can be produced with recycling biowaste from cities or urban areas, a kind of biomass management together with the region. We want to cultivate also food, herbs and medicinal plants are or were typical for each country or region we start, especially ancient plants were important in old times but today’s society has forgotten. Greening Deserts projects are also good for refugee camps. Refugees can be integrated into the greening process, building greenhouses for food, medicine and forestation of parks and woods. The US Biochar Initiative (USBI) is advancing the production and use of biochar in industrial, agricultural and infrastructure markets to reduce biomass waste, grow the economy, and mitigate climate change. Black Girl Environmentalist is a national community dedicated to empowering Black girls, women and non-binary people in the climate movement. We create pathways for emerging climate leaders of color to thrive across environmental disciplines through the areas of: community building, green workforce development, and narrative change. BGE was founded by climate activist and Rhodes Scholar Wawa Gatheru. Having been in the environmental and climate space for almost ten years, Wawa could not help but notice that while Black girls and women exist at the forefront of environmental injustice, they were amongst the least supported or celebrated in the mainstream environmental movement. She founded BGE to help cultivate opportunities for BGE's to be supported and empowered. BGE is collectively committed to centering Black women and non-binary folks in the environmental movement while shifting inequitable power structures that create barriers to access environmental disciplines. Dialogue – Leadership – Change: Using 21st century tools to bridge the waste solutions expertise gap worldwide. be Waste Wise is a simple idea: Use 21st century tools to share expertise globally, opening up high-quality, leading edge thinking to those who have not had access to this expertise, while also eliminating the environmental and financial costs of global conferences. Waste Wise will conduct online video panels with experts from across the waste spectrum using Google+ Hangouts, broadcast them live, and then publish content for ready use by decision makers, policy analysts, experts and advocates.

The Plant is a 93,500 sq. ft. former meat packing plant in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood that has been repurposed into a research and production facility comprising a collaborative community of small food businesses. A complex and highly interrelated system, The Plant is a living laboratory that demonstrates techniques for reimagining waste as a resource, achieving economies of scale, and incubating small businesses. The goal of The Plant is to create replicable models for efficiencies that close loops of waste and energy and to encourage others to implement these techniques to combat climate change. The owner and operator of The Plant is Bubbly Dynamics, LLC, a social enterprise whose mission is to create replicable models for ecologically responsible and sustainable urban industrial development. Established in 2002, Bubbly Dynamics is dedicated to incubating small businesses in formerly vacant, industrial buildings located in disinvested communities, and sharing our findings on the creative approaches to resource and energy efficiencies via an open-sourced toolkit. Bubbly Dynamics' first project was the Chicago Sustainable Manufacturing Center located in the Stockyards Industrial Corridor. This 24,000 sq. ft. former paint warehouse was sustainably renovated using salvaged materials and green building techniques. It is now fully occupied with independent manufacturing businesses and artists.

Carba specializes in low energy carbon dioxide removal (CDR) solutions and next-generation carbon materials. Carba's novel low-temperature pyrolysis reactors lead to higher yields of biochar that can be used to promote agriculture, buried for permanent removal, or productized to replace coal and oil.

Our Mission: To transform urban waterways into wildlife sanctuaries, and to provide an opportunity for all city residents to reconnect with nature in new and meaningful ways. How We Work: We bring together innovators, ecologists and designers in the urban waterway space from around the world to create truly innovative, wildlife-first destinations. We include local community groups in the design and construction process, so that everyone from students, to local businesses plays an active role in making their surrounding world a better place with their own hands and minds. In addition, we run a layer of programming at these destinations that includes everything from elementary school curriculum, to sponsoring graduate school research projects, to organizing conservation-minded volunteer programs for people of all ages. How We Are Different: Most spaces are created to be “people-first,” but we design wildlife-first solutions and then find sustainable ways for people to access, enjoy and benefit from that space, creating something more special for wildlife and humans alike. With our wildlife-first ethos, we look at problems differently and think of creative ways to improve and increase wildlife habitat. Our Projects: Our core work thus far has been in Chicago, where we are currently building the Wild Mile in partnership with SOM, the City of Chicago and other local partners. When complete, it will be a mile-long floating eco-park on the Chicago River, fit with floating walkways, floating gardens, and even floating forests.

Carbon BioCapture® ("CBC"), a minority, woman-owned company based in Miami​, capitalizes on Clean Energy ESB S.A.’s patented technology and pioneering work with flue gases from AES’ coal-burning power plant in Chile and Argos’ cement plant in Colombia by developing, building, deploying, and operating point-source carbon capture farms that convert anthropogenic CO2 into microalgae biomass. CBC's unique microalgae management system and proprietary PBR design combined, achieve a well-documented and independently verified 86% capture effectiveness at a 13% CO2 feed gas content. In addition to CO2, the microalgae capture nearly 100% of ppm range contaminants such SOx and NOx. Photosynthesis generates oxygen, which is continuously liberated into the atmosphere, and biomass, which is regularly harvested by partially draining the PBRs, which are then replenished with fresh-, salt-, or brackish water. As a bonus, water-borne pollutants are also sequestered by the microalgae, which can help to decontaminate process water run through the PBRs. CBC provides carbon capture as a service ("CCaaS") to GHG-emitting industries. It can currently deploy 12.500 PBR per hectare (ha). These high-density PBR arrays constitute a literal “carbon capture farm” and can be sited on contaminated or otherwise unproductive land adjacent to or within the CO2 emitting plant’s premises.
