PRAXI Network has been established as a strategic partnership of the industrial and research communities in Greece with the main aim to support the competitiveness of the Greek SMEs and RTOs through the bridging the gap between research and market, through technology transfer and innovation support. Mere Plantations owns the leasehold rights for 50 years on over 4,000 Hectares (10,000 Acres) of degraded forestland. The land is found over 2 distinct sites located on degraded former forestland within the Afram Headwaters Forest Reserve (AHFR). The reserve is located within the transition zone of the Ashanti Region in Ghana. The company was established in January 2007 to reforest both sites under a monoculture plantation of Teak (Tectona Grandis). For the sake of good husbandry and essential biodiversity, Mere intersperse stands with native hardwoods. The site is broken down into compartments of approximately 100-120 Hectares; these are further broken down into sub plots of around 25-40 Hectares. Each compartment is identified by an 8-metre wide external fire ride. The internal plots are outlined by 4-metre wide internal rides. Fire rides are essential during the dry season between December and April/May. For the remainder of the year they serve as access roads. Mere use tree spacing of 2 metre x 2 metre, or more commonly 2.5 metre x 2.5 metre spacing. The stocking density is high, generating stocking levels of 2,500 and 1,600 trees respectively. Since planting, growth has been observed in the upper end of the forecast spectrum. Conditions in Afram are among some of the best recorded for Teak plantations. Once full, if the same planting density is maintained, the two sites are expected to house over 7 million trees.

The Swiss Import Promotion Programme (SIPPO) is a longstanding, well-established initiative of the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) with the overall vision of sustainable and inclusive economic growth and integration of SIPPO partner countries into world trade, through its mission of supporting BSOs to increase export promotion capacity and service provision to export-ready companies. Since April 2017, SIPPO is being implemented under the direction of Swisscontact in partnership with BHP Brugger and Partners and Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation. Through SIPPO’s network of international and national experts, the programme aims at supporting BSOs to increase their export promotion capacity and service provision to export-ready companies. The programme is a powerful tool in promoting sustainable trade in 11 countries and 6 sectors: Fish& Seafood, Processed Foods, Natural Ingredients, Technical Wood, Value-added Textiles and Sustainable Tourism. SIPPO supports BSOs through tailor-made capacity building in two areas: 1) Improving BSO Market entry activities through capacity building in market intelligence, trade fair participation, selling missions, buyer missions and study tours, and 2) Institutional Strengthening of Business Support Organizations (BSOs) through Strategic planning and positioning, Project Cycle Management and Knowledge sharing and learning. BSOs are capacitated at their own speed and ownership is placed entirely in the hands of the service provider: BSOs who want to explore and improve access to new markets and opportunities for their export-ready companies to undertake these “last mile services” activities. SIPPO thereby enhances BSO member companies’ performances in export and thus contributes to increased income and more and better jobs.
